“A safe and peaceful community” to grow a family
The Almohommad family CAME to Canada to escape war, and created a home in Harriston
Where did you move from and why did you decide to Move to Minto?
“Our family was originally from Turkey. We were sponsored by the Harriston Presbyterian Church to come to Canada as refugees. We have been in Minto (Canada) for five years. My wife Hannan and I have nine children, and all attend Minto-Clifford Public School or Norwell District Secondary School.”
What are some of your favourite ways to spend time in Minto?
“We love summer! Our kids spend a lot of time at the local swimming pool and playing in the parks. I [Ahmad] enjoy going for walks around the community and saying hello to all the friendly people.”
“Minto is safe and peaceful, and the people are friendly and helpful. You feel comfortable… like family.”
Do you have a favourite local business or place to shop?
“Scoop It Bulk and Frozen Foods and Gray’s Auction have large quantities of food to serve our large family. We also enjoy visiting the local Foodland and Harriston Home Hardware. Everyone is friendly and helpful.”
What has surprised you about living here?
“The COLD! We enjoy being able to get fresh food from local farms and our own gardens. In the city you don’t necessarily have room for your own garden.”
What would you tell someone who was interested in moving to Minto?
“Ahmad’s brother and his family recently moved to Minto (Harriston). We told them and others that Minto is safe and peaceful, and the people are friendly and helpful. You feel comfortable… like family.”
